Vegas Dance Explosion, 2021 – Line Dancing Heaven!

vde mainimage 1

I’ve been line dancing for a few years now and in that time made friends with some who are way more intense about their line dancing than me!

One of these more dedicated friends of mine, Jeannie, has told me about this yearly event in Vegas: “Line Dance Explosion.”

She said I should attend. This year I decided to come along and see what all the fuss was about! I can truly say now, my eyes are open to the world of line dancing in a new way.

I knew line dancing was popular the world over, but if you are an instructor or a line dance fanatic, this is your place, Vegas Dance Explosion is truly line dance heaven! Read on for my full recap and round-up of the event and all that took place.

What is Vegas Dance Explosion?

Vegas Dance Explosion is a yearly 6 day, 6-night event of line dance workshops, open dancing (dance parties!), and special shows put on by the instructors themselves. Held this year from November 9-14, 2021 in the Westgate Hotel, Las Vegas. Attendees enjoy classes & open dancing spread throughout 6 large ballrooms with wooden dance floors from 9 am on into the late night.

The organizers of the event are Doug & Jackie Miranda. The Mirandas have been organizing the event for many years and truly put on an amazing event, well worth the price of admission.

Of the 6 dedicated ballrooms 4 for workshops that cater to all levels of dancers, one large “lobby” area dance floor for open dancing, and one floor for practicing and competition. The lobby dance floor features a DJ that takes requests all day for open dancing even when the workshops are taking place. This offers a great option to take a break from learning something new to just dancing all your old favorites.

See the video below for a fun moment where Adia Nuno danced her dance “Troublemaker” in the lobby to help us get it down better! There were a lot of these moments! It was great to dance the new dances in the evenings at the dance parties, where the choreographers would be there to lead and reinforce even more their new dances.

My First Vegas Dance Explosion!

To sum up my experience at my first VDE, I was basically a little star-struck to see all these very famous and accomplished choreographers all in one place. It was cool to see how nice and approachable they all were as well.

I also, contrary to how I was advised to go about things, attended too many workshops I guess! I went to 13 over 3 days. But really I’m glad I did. Even though I don’t remember much, I was happy to just experience it and take it all in and see how the various instructors taught their classes.

One highlight for me was attending 3 of Jo Thompson-Szymanski’s workshops.
I learned her line dances:
Where Oh Where (IMP), My Favorite (I), and Do My Thing (I).

Jo Thompson-Szymanski teaches her line dance Do My Thing.

She said one thing she likes to do when she teaches is to include the music “early & often.” I think this was a really great idea. It seemed smart to have us learn smaller “bite-size” chunks of the choreography to some of the actual music first and then continue to add more pieces to it.

I also noticed she had us practice other walls with those smaller chunks of the dance. So, we learned counts 1-8 and then tried it on other walls, before moving on. Brilliant!

Lastly, Jo Thompson-Szymanski added styling tips that, to me really showed her love of dance. See the video below to hear her explain the history behind adding the styling she referred to as walking like “Shorty George.” Just really great stuff you only get from a seasoned pro like Jo Thompson-Szymanski!

Jo Thompson-Szymanski adds some styling to her dance Where Oh Where.

But then, of course, I also took 10 more! I also attended workshops taught by Roy Verdonk, Adia Nuno, Darren Bailey, Amy Bailey, Britt Beresik, Rick Dominguez, and Ruben Luna. But there were so many more! The event featured 24 choreographers total. But I’ll get into the numbers of the event in a little bit.

Here is Roy Verdonk teaching us his intermediate (I) line dance Rib To My Heart.

So, for me, I attended a total of 13 workshops, learning 15 dances in total.

The Flash Mob!

Another great highlight of the event was a planned Flash Mob organized by Jackie Miranda. Over the course of the week she taught us a very simple beginner line dance and finally on Friday at lunch we went out and danced it in the Westgate Hotel Lobby! The dance was just called “Westgate Celebration!” and was danced to Kool & the Gang’s Celebration.

Note: In the hotel where we were for the event there was also the ongoing Miss America Contest. And the moment we started our flash mob, there were a few contestants right there! It was so fun to see some of them jump in with us and start dancing!

Vegas Dance Explosion by the Numbers!

Here are some quick numbers, just to give an idea of the expanse of the event.

Dance Levels

Of all the 114 Dances taught 6 levels of difficulty were covered. I loved that while this was an event for people serious about their line dancing, it wasn’t just about experienced dancers. All level dancers were welcome and served. In fact, here’s the breakdown and a pie chart showing how many dances at each level:

dancelevels
Level of DancesTaught at Vegas Dance Explosion
(B)=Beginner47
(HB)=High Beginner4
(IMP)=Improver16
(HI)=High Intermediate1
(I)=Intermediate40
(A)=Advanced6

The Instructors & DJs

Line Dance Explosion 2021, featured 27 great instructors and/or DJs. See the list below (organized alphabetically by their last names) and click on the instructor names to pop down to the summary of what line dances they each taught this year at the event.

Another fun thing about the event was the theme. There were a couple of great shows put on in the evenings by the instructors, but the finale was really Saturday night which had a roaring 20s theme. And leading up to that we were greeted from the beginning with these amazing giant top-notch posters in the main lobby of all the instructors & DJs there for the week dressed up in their roaring 20s costumes! Here are the posters for your enjoyment.

It’s a Wrap! Thank You Vegas Dance Explosion!

When I got back home from the Vegas Dance Explosion, my line dancing friends all were asking: “So, will you go again?” And I said to all without hesitation “Yes!”

I think it was a lot to take in the first time, so just being there 3 days & 3 nights was enough, but I was a little sad to leave early and plan on taking on the whole thing next year. I’ll know what to expect and will probably have even more fun! Included are a couple more videos from the week as well as photos with friends and some of the great choreographers.

Tuesday and Wednesday nights began with the choreographers showing us what was to come the next day! Here are Amy Bailey, Rebecca Lee, and Jo Thompson-Szymanski demonstrating Midnight Rendevous, a beginner line dance.
